Vehicle care guide

General guidance based on widely published manufacturer and product-maker care advice. Needs vary by model and year, so ask Romeo before any correction work. Our published packages are for cars.

Is my car’s paint soft or hard?

Clear coats differ in hardness. Some marques and eras (often cited: some Japanese makes and certain older Mercedes) are softer and mar easily, while many German “ceramic” clears are harder and take more work to correct. It varies by model and year, so check with Romeo before any correction work. We always take paint depth readings and do a test spot first.

How do I look after matte, satin or frozen paint?

Never polish, wax, glaze or machine-correct matte, satin or “frozen” paint, and avoid automatic car washes and brushes: anything abrasive or filling makes shiny patches that cannot be undone. Hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and dedicated matte-safe products, blot or air-dry, and remove bird droppings quickly. Scratches on matte usually mean a panel repair, not a polish.

How should I care for paint protection film (PPF) or a wrap?

Do not use cutting compounds or aggressive machine polishing on PPF or vinyl wraps. Keep a pressure washer well back (roughly 30 cm or more) and never aim at film edges. Avoid strong solvents and tar removers unless the film maker says they are safe. Hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo, dry gently, and check edges for lifting. Some gloss films can be lightly refreshed with film-safe products; ask Romeo first.

How do you treat single-stage or classic paint and lacquer?

Many classics have single-stage paint (colour and gloss in one layer) or old lacquer, which is thinner and more delicate than modern clear coats. It needs gentle, minimal correction and protection, and some old finishes should not be machine polished at all. It varies by model and year, so check with Romeo before any correction work.

My car has just been resprayed. When can it be detailed or coated?

Fresh paint needs time to cure. A gentle hand wash is usually fine after a short wait, but hold off on machine polishing, waxing or ceramic coating until the body shop says the paint has fully cured, which can be weeks depending on the paint system. Ask your body shop for their timing and tell Romeo when you book.

What causes swirl marks and how do I avoid them?

Most swirls come from washing and drying: automatic brush washes, dirty sponges or mitts, wiping a dry or dusty car, and rough towels. Avoid them with a two-bucket hand wash, a clean microfibre mitt, a pre-wash foam to lift grit first, and a soft drying towel or air-dryer. Existing swirls can be polished out.

How quickly should I remove bird droppings, tree sap or fallout?

As soon as you can, ideally the same day, especially in hot weather when they etch faster. Soften with water or a dedicated quick detailer and lift off gently; never scrape or rub dry. Tree sap and tar need a dedicated remover. Iron fallout and embedded grime are removed during decontamination in our packages.

Can I wash or apply products in hot sun?

Avoid it where possible. Hot panels dry shampoo and water too fast, leaving water spots and streaks, and many products should only be applied to a cool panel. Wash early or late in the day, or in the shade.

What is the safest way to wash my car?

Rinse first, pre-wash with snow foam, then a two-bucket hand wash (one bucket of pH-neutral shampoo, one of rinse water, ideally both with grit guards) using a clean microfibre mitt, top to bottom. Do wheels with separate tools. Dry with a soft drying towel or air-blower. Avoid automatic brush washes.

How should I look after my car in winter?

Road salt and grime speed up corrosion, so rinse the car, wheel arches and underside more often in winter, especially after gritted roads. A layer of protection (sealant or ceramic coating) applied before winter makes washing easier. Avoid scraping ice off with anything hard, and let a frozen car thaw rather than pouring hot water on glass.

Is it safe to clean around parking sensors, radar and ADAS cameras?

Yes, gently. Keep the pressure washer well back from parking sensors, radar panels and camera units, never machine polish over them, and do not cover them with thick film or products unless approved. Damage or misalignment there can mean a dealer recalibration. Clean them by hand with a soft microfibre.

How do I care for unpainted plastic trim?

Clean textured plastic with an all-purpose cleaner at the right dilution and a soft brush, then use a dedicated trim protectant with UV protection. Keep polish and wax off it, as they leave white residue. Faded trim can often be restored with a dedicated trim restorer or coating.

How should carbon fibre parts be cleaned?

It depends on the finish. Gloss, clear-coated carbon is cared for like paint. Matte or raw carbon must not be polished or waxed; clean it gently with pH-neutral products and protect only with matte-safe products. If you are not sure which you have, ask Romeo.

How do I clean chrome and polished aluminium?

Use a gentle, pH-neutral approach and soft microfibre. Avoid acidic or strong alkaline cleaners, which can stain or dull them. Polished aluminium and chrome can be refreshed with a dedicated metal polish by hand, sparingly, then protected.

How do I look after rubber seals and badges?

Clean seals gently and use a rubber conditioner now and then to stop them drying and cracking, especially in winter. Around badges and emblems, use a soft brush rather than rubbing hard, and keep pressure washers back from badge edges.

What should I use on glass, tinted windows and special windscreens?

Use an ammonia-free glass cleaner, especially on tinted windows, as ammonia can damage tint film. Be gentle on heated, acoustic, coated and head-up display windscreens, and avoid abrasive glass polish on any coated glass unless the maker allows it. Keep the area in front of ADAS cameras clean and free of film or stickers. Water-repellent glass coatings help visibility in rain.

Why are my wipers smearing?

Usually dirty or worn blades, or residue on the glass. Wipe the blades with a damp microfibre, clean the screen properly, and replace blades if they are split or chattering. Lift wipers before icy nights so they do not freeze to the glass.

How do you clean wheels with carbon-ceramic brakes?

Gently. Use only pH-neutral wheel cleaners, never acid-based ones, and avoid scrubbing, pressure-washing point-blank or knocking the carbon-ceramic discs and pads with brushes or tools. Let brakes cool fully before cleaning.

How should I clean diamond-cut, polished, matte or forged wheels?

Use a pH-neutral wheel cleaner and soft brushes. Avoid acid wheel cleaners and strong alkalis on diamond-cut, polished, matte or forged finishes, which can stain, cloud or corrode them. Do not polish matte wheels. A wheel coating makes brake dust easier to rinse off.

How do I clean leather seats?

Most car leather is pigmented (coated) and handles a gentle leather cleaner well. Semi-aniline and aniline leather, found in some high-end cars such as some Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Aston Martin models, is more delicate and absorbs stains more easily, so use only a mild, pH-balanced leather cleaner and a soft brush, then a leather protectant. Avoid household cleaners and anything harsh. Varies by model, so ask Romeo if unsure.

How do I clean Alcantara or suede?

Gently: a dedicated Alcantara cleaner, minimal moisture, and a soft brush or microfibre, then brush the pile in one direction to restore it. Avoid soaking it, leather conditioners and harsh cleaners, which mat the surface. Steering wheels benefit from regular light cleaning to stop oils building up.

How should I clean piano black, screens, open-pore wood and headliners?

Piano black and touchscreens scratch very easily: dust with a clean, soft microfibre and a little interior detailer, never paper towels or dry wiping. Screens may have anti-glare coatings, so avoid alcohol or ammonia unless the maker allows it. Open-pore wood is unsealed: wipe with a barely damp cloth only, no polish or oils unless recommended. Headliners are glued fabric: spot-clean lightly and never soak them, or they can sag.

How do I care for a convertible roof?

It depends on the material. Fabric roofs need a dedicated fabric roof cleaner, a soft brush, thorough rinsing and then a fabric proofer to keep them water-repellent. Vinyl roofs need a vinyl cleaner and UV protectant. Keep pressure washers well back, never use an automatic brush wash, and let the roof dry fully before folding it down.

Is there anything special about detailing an electric car or Tesla?

Mostly it is the same as any car, with a few cautions: keep the pressure washer back from the charge port, underbody and high-voltage components and never aim it point-blank there; make sure the charge port is closed; and be gentle with frunk and door seals. Some EVs have a car-wash mode, so use it if your car has one. Many EVs have soft paint, so careful washing matters. Varies by model, so ask Romeo if unsure.

How should a classic car be detailed?

Gently and conservatively. Classics often have thin single-stage or lacquer paint, original chrome, old rubber and delicate interiors, so minimal correction, gentle cleaners and good protection come first. Store indoors where possible. It varies by model and year, so check with Romeo before any correction work.

Any specific care for Mercedes, BMW, Audi or Porsche?

Normal good practice applies. Some points: Mercedes and BMW offer matte paint options (designo magno, Frozen) that must never be polished or waxed. Many German makes use harder scratch-resistant clears that take more effort to correct. Performance models (AMG, M, RS, Porsche) may have carbon-ceramic brakes, which need pH-neutral cleaners only, and many have radar and parking sensors in the bumpers. It varies by model and year, so check with Romeo before any correction work.

Any specific care for Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren or Aston Martin?

Supercars often combine thin or soft paint, carbon fibre (gloss or matte), carbon-ceramic brakes, PPF and low splitters, so they need gentle, careful work: pH-neutral wheel cleaners only, no acid near the brakes, no polishing on matte carbon or film, and care around aero parts and sensors. It varies by model and year, so check with Romeo before any correction work.

Any specific care for Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Range Rover or Land Rover?

Rolls-Royce and Bentley often have delicate semi-aniline leather, open-pore wood and lots of chrome or brightwork, so mild cleaners and soft tools matter. Range Rover and Land Rover models can have satin or matte paint options, large panoramic roofs and many sensors; satin finishes must not be polished. It varies by model and year, so check with Romeo before any correction work.

How should a van or commercial vehicle be cleaned?

Wash large panels in sections so products do not dry on. Signwriting, decals and livery vinyl need the same care as wraps: keep a pressure washer well back from edges, avoid strong solvents and abrasive polish on the vinyl, and check edges for lifting. Roofs, gutters and ladder racks collect dirt and should be rinsed regularly. Our published packages are for cars; for a van, please email Romeo to ask what is possible.

How should minibuses, buses, coaches or fleet vehicles be cleaned?

For passenger vehicles, regular interior hygiene matters most: clean first, then use a disinfectant suited to each surface on high-touch points such as handrails, seat tops, belts and buttons, following the product’s contact time. Exterior care follows the same rules as vans, including care around livery vinyl. Our published packages are for cars; for buses, coaches or fleets, please email Romeo to ask what is possible.

How should a motorhome or campervan be cleaned?

Motorhome bodies are often GRP (fibreglass) or aluminium with many sealed joints, vents and windows. Keep pressure washers away from seals, vents and acrylic windows, use products suitable for GRP, and clean acrylic windows only with soft cloths and suitable cleaners, as they scratch easily. Check sealant joints regularly for cracks. Our published packages are for cars; for a motorhome, please email Romeo to ask what is possible.

How should a motorcycle be cleaned?

Wash with a gentle shampoo, and do not pressure-wash wheel bearings, electrics, switchgear or the chain. Keep polish, wax and dressings off brake discs and tyre treads. Dry the bike afterwards and lubricate the chain. Matte parts need matte-safe products only. Our published packages are for cars; for a motorcycle, please email Romeo to ask what is possible.
